In 2020, CFHR inaugurated the Institute for Responsible Artificial Intelligence & Human Rights, an independent research institute spearheaded by our Legal Fellow. This institute is dedicated to shaping Pakistan’s legal and policy ecosystem for artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring its development is both sustainable and human rights-compliant.
As technology continues to evolve rapidly, it brings both challenges and opportunities. In Pakistan, the digital landscape offers immense potential for economic growth, citizen-centric governance, and reform of the criminal justice system, particularly through AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Robotics. However, with the increasing reliance on these technologies, concerns have surfaced regarding issues such as inequality, surveillance, privacy, accountability, intellectual property, online anonymity, democracy, and the rule of law.
AI’s integration into daily life in Pakistan offers exciting prospects, but these opportunities must be carefully balanced with the associated risks. The Institute is committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring that Pakistan can harness the benefits of these technologies responsibly. Our mission is to:
We work across Pakistan, driving legal reform, advocacy, and policy change to protect human rights and empower communities.
