Implementing Women's Marriage Rights in Legal Aid & Advocacy Clinics in Pakistan

Centre for Human Rights (CFHR) hosted a three-day training workshop on “Implementing Women's Marriage Rights in Legal Aid & Advocacy Clinics in Pakistan” at Universal College Lahore from 21st-23rd October 2024. The training aimed to equip law professors and lecturers from 13 universities across Pakistan — with representation from Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh — to strengthen clinical legal education (CLE) and legal aid access for women and girls nationwide.

Participants included: Ahmad Shahmir from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology; Arooj Aziz Malik from Mirpur University of Science & Technology (MUST); Banari Baloch from University of Balochistan; Beenish Aslam from International Islamic University, Islamabad; Dr. Afzaal Mehmood from Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU) Sheringal, Pakistan; Dr. Muhammad Bilal from Bahauddin Zakariya University; Dr. Muhammad Fahd Amin from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad; Dr. Rizwana Gul from Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan; Hira Shahjehan from Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar, Pakistan; Huriya Fatima from Pakistan College of Law ; Imran Khan from University of Balochistan; Maira Bokhari from Kinnaird College for Women (KCW), Lahore - Pakistan; Maira Mumtaz from Lahore University of Management Sciences; and Rehana Anjum from University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

Through interactive discussions and activities, sessions focused on understanding CLE; the significance of Women's Marriage Rights (WMRs) Legal Aid & Advocacy Clinics; and key components, such as knowledge, skill and behaviour, legal aid provision, and curriculum design. Sessions were led and facilitated by Angbeen Mirza, Fatima Yasmin B., Hamid Azim Leghari, Tasneem Kausar, Barrister Umar Khan, Sevim Saadat, Seher Aftab, Beenish Zia, and Ali Imtinan.

During the workshop, CFHR launched its Handbook on WMRs Legal Aid & Advocacy Clinics in Pakistan to serve as a practical resource for developing legal aid clinics on WMRs. The training marked a meaningful step to advancing human rights and promoting access to justice through CLE, empowering future legal professionals to support women's rights with accessible and high-quality legal assistance.
