The Centre for Human Rights (CFHR) is closely affiliated with the University College Association for Mooters (UCAM), a student-led society established in 2013 to promote moot court competitions at Universal College Lahore (UCL). Over the years, UCAM has played a pivotal role in advancing Pakistan’s mooting culture by organising national and international competitions and offering law students a platform to develop their advocacy, legal research, and oral argumentation skills.
Operating under the supervision of UCL faculty and with mentorship from CFHR members, UCAM remains committed to:
UCAM was founded with the goal of revitalising Pakistan’s mooting circuit and raising awareness about the significance of moot court competitions for legal education. The society held its first competition in 2013 as part of CFHR’s collaboration with the American Bar Association – Rule of Law Initiative, aimed at strengthening due process and fair trial standards in Pakistan’s anti-terrorism courts.
Since then, UCAM has significantly contributed to the development of mooting in Pakistan by:
- Hosting six nationwide moot court competitions, each drawing around 16 teams and nearly 100 law students from across the country, including Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Balochistan, Islamabad, Punjab, and Sindh
- Organising Pakistan’s first international moot court competition in 2018, which featured teams from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Sri Lanka, the United States, Prague, and Hong Kong
- Conducting Pakistan’s first national rounds of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition in March 2020 in collaboration with the Department of Justice and the American Embassy in Islamabad
- Launching the country’s first national arbitration competition
UCAM members have proudly represented Pakistan in some of the world’s most prestigious mooting forums, including:
- Carey Law Moot – Anglo-American University, Prague
- Philip C. Jessup International Rounds
- Henry Dunant International Humanitarian Law Moot Court (South Asian Rounds)
- Jean-Pictet Competition
Committed to inclusivity, UCAM maintains a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity. Participation in international competitions is determined through mock trials, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process. UCAM welcomes all law students—especially first-years passionate about research and advocacy—to join its vibrant and growing community at UCL.
