International Symposium on Women’s Marriage Rights in Pakistan

On 9th and 10th November 2022, the Centre for Human Rights (CFHR) organized the first International Symposium on Women’s Marriage Rights in Pakistan at Universal College Lahore. The symposium aimed to generate discourse in academic and policy circles to enhance the protection and realization of women’s marriage rights. It served as a platform for peer review of student and professional submissions for the upcoming thematic edition of the Human Rights Review (HRR) on Women’s Marriage Rights, set for publication in February 2022. The event facilitated meaningful exchanges among diverse stakeholders on the realities, challenges, and barriers surrounding marriage rights in Pakistan.

Leading up to the symposium, CFHR hosted four virtual author-led panel discussions from 25th October to 4th November 2022, covering critical issues such as the marital rights of minority women, underage marriages, and marital rape. Over a hundred participants from academic and professional backgrounds attended these sessions, with students benefiting from direct engagement with experts.

The two-day symposium featured both author-led and issue-based panels. Author-led panels involved paper presentations followed by expert insights and audience Q&A sessions. Whereas, issue-based panels provided a broader discourse on key themes, mobilizing interest, identifying areas for intervention, and encouraging new submissions to the journal. These discussions aimed to expand the scope of research and engagement on women’s marriage rights in Pakistan.

The overarching aim of the initiative was to provide a platform for peer-review of student and professional submissions for the upcoming thematic edition of the HRR on Women’s Marriage Rights. Moreover, the event aimed at acting as a catalyst to bring together a variety of stakeholders to participate in meaningful exchange on realities surrounding marriage rights, challenges and barriers, and the way forward for women in Pakistan.

Select key objectives included:

  • Providing a space for authors who have contributed to the HRR to present their research findings in the presence of stakeholders who are capable and willing to effectuate the proposed policy reforms.
  • Encouraging discussion centered on the need for restricting illegal and rights-violating practices, including child and forced marriages, arbitrary divorce, etc.
  • Allowing panelists to offer their insights on the research topic and opening the floor for questions from the audience.
  • Stimulating awareness on women’s marriage rights issues through encouraging not only academic writing and discussion but also literary writing and art submissions to encourage a versatile approach towards spreading awareness whilst inviting contributions from a diverse pool of people who share mutual passion for the themes discussed.

Participants: Over the course of the two days, 554 individuals, comprising 248 in-person attendees and 306 virtual attendees, participated at the symposium. In addition to this, select panels were broadcasted live on facebook, cumulatively gathering 13,752 views, as at the time of writing of this report. Moreover, in-line with CFHR’s aim to encourage participation from women and the youth, more than half of the total participants were female and more than two-thirds were students. Furthermore, to ensure representation, ethnocultural diversity, and to elevate the discourse on marriage rights to a national level, CFHR invited relevant stakeholders and experts from provinces other than Punjab to partake at the event.

Collaborative Partnership Activities: To build multistakeholder synergies and for successful administration of the symposium, CFHR collaborated with a number of local organisations, including government departments, civil society organisations, and media firms. These included:

Virtual Sessions: In order to kickstart the main in-person symposium event, CFHR organised four webinars built around two professional and two student submissions received for the thematic edition of the Human Rights Review.

In-person Sessions (Day 1): On 9th November, the first day of the symposium, a total of seven panel discussions took place, including five author-led panels and two issue-based discussions. The five author-led panels comprised three professional and two student submissions received for the thematic edition of the Human Rights Review.

In-person Sessions (Day 2): The second day of the symposium began with another author-led panel discussion, along with a concurrent youth-centric session. As planned, the second day featured additional sub-events, including the Know-Your-Rights Workshop, Parwaaz Competition, and a plenary session on the preliminary findings of the diagnostic study.
